About

Portrait of Eric Iverson, founder of Montage Neuroscience, smiling, in a navy blazer and light blue shirt

Hi, I’m Eric Iverson, an electrical engineer whose life was changed forever by my daughter’s drug-resistant epilepsy. Now I dedicate my work to helping engineers and researchers who are working to build a better future for families like mine.

PhD in Electrical Engineering

With more than a decade of research and development in the semiconductor industry

Technology development to production

Taking research concepts to volume production through test chip design, experimental design, electrical testing, data analysis, and computational modeling

Electrical characterization and noise analysis

I’ve done low-current, low-voltage, and low-noise electrical device characterization and modeling for more than 15 years in both academic and corporate research labs. I design measurement plans, detect and remove artifacts like interference and drift, and fit statistical models to large datasets. These methods carry over to biopotential acquisition and to the analysis of intracranial EEG and other electrophysiological signals.

A personal stake

My youngest daughter was born in 2023 with focal cortical dysplasia and has undergone four epilepsy surgeries, including a hemispherotomy. I’ve dedicated the remainder of my career to doing everything I can to help children with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Services

Time-series analysis of EEG, iEEG/SEEG, and other physiological signals

Preprocessing, artifact rejection, and quality control; spectral and connectivity feature extraction; and detection of events such as interictal epileptiform discharges and seizures.

Statistical and simulation modeling

Statistical model calibration, Monte Carlo simulation, rare-event (tail) statistics, and parameter estimation from measured data.

Low-noise measurement system design and troubleshooting for biopotential acquisition

Scoping of signal-chain architecture, electrode and amplifier selection, input-referred noise budgeting, and calibration strategy, to meet requirements for noise floor and dynamic range before hardware is committed. I also troubleshoot noise, drift, and other performance problems in acquisition systems you already have running. My measurement background is in semiconductor devices, including test chips with on-chip measurement circuits, and I now apply it to biopotential systems.

Research software and data management

I write Python analysis code and data pipelines, and I’m developing tools for loading and exploring BIDS datasets. I can help convert data to BIDS (including iEEG-BIDS) or NWB, prepare datasets for NIH data management and sharing plans, turn laboratory analysis code into documented, tested Python packages, and build database and de-identification tools that are developed and validated on synthetic data, so that no protected health information is accessed.

I also take contract work directly with device, diagnostics, and other neurotechnology companies, under NDA.

Contributing to grant applications

A free 30-minute call is the best way to find out whether I can help. Bring a rough aim, a description of your data, or a specific technical question. That’s plenty to get started, and feel free to include anyone on your team who’ll be working with the data. We’ll talk through what you’re trying to do and figure out together whether I’m a good fit.

If I am, we’ll work out the scope of my contribution, and I’ll draft the methods and budget justification text, a biosketch, and a letter of support.

How I work

Let’s start with a conversation. Tell me what you’re trying to accomplish, what you’ve already tried, and what success would look like to you. Sometimes the question you bring is part of a larger one, and if so, we’ll talk about that too.

The next step is putting our agreement in writing. Together we’ll settle on:

  • The question we’re answering, and what’s out of scope
  • What I’ll deliver, with milestones and acceptance criteria
  • What I need from you: data access, a point person, and time at key decisions
  • Confidentiality and how we handle PHI
  • How we’ll check in, and how we’ll adjust if the work turns up something new

While we work, I’ll stay in close contact with your team, sharing progress and talking through questions as they come up. If I spot a problem with the data, the approach, or the fit, I’ll bring it to you right away. You’ll get my honest read, and then we’ll decide together how to move forward.

When we wrap up, the code is yours, documented and owned by your lab. I’ll walk your team through it so you can run and extend it on your own, and I’ll ask how the engagement went for you.

For pricing, I use a fixed scope for well-defined projects and an hourly or daily rate for open-ended work.

Caregiver perspective for development and research teams

I’m the parent of a child with drug-resistant epilepsy, and I’m happy to meet with teams that rarely get to talk with patients or caregivers: engineering, data science, and modeling groups; device and diagnostic developers; translational researchers; and regulatory or commercial staff.

I’ll share what it was like to search for answers for our daughter, how each decision was actually made, and what has changed for her because of research and engineering like yours, and I’ll leave plenty of time for your team’s questions. Many teams never meet the children they’re working for, and seeing that end goal can bring meaning and drive through the hard stretches of work.

I’m a parent and an engineer, not a clinician, so I speak only from our family’s experience and don’t give medical advice.
